After 13 years, WE SET SAIL are still trying to prove that the ‘album’ isn’t dead.
Four years in the making, the announcement of their latest record is coupled with the release of the first new music from the band in over two years, and a fresh video to boot.
Titled, Well, that’s 13 years of my life I’ll never get back, their latest single is a perfect reflection of the band’s affable cynicism for which they’re known. But all cynicism aside, Well, that’s 13 years of my life I’ll never get back, is at its core, a celebration of musical longevity, friendship, and a sense of achievement that is rarely experienced by bands who don’t make it this far.
Accordingly, WE SET SAIL’s new single taken from their third, self-produced studio album, aptly titled Ritual and Ceremony, is a testament to this nostalgic reflection, further fortified through the video of getting matching band tattoos and the contentment of sitting around a fire. Indeed, those years can’t be returned, but for WE SET SAIL, that was never really a concern.
“This song came about towards the end of writing the new record. I remember writing the riff and thinking, ‘it’s super catchy but super sad sounding—perfect WE SET SAIL.’
Being a band for 13 years is tough—every band I have ever done has lasted a few years at the most. Somehow WE SET SAIL has lasted this long based solely on us all just getting along and still being stoked to play music together. This song is about that and about how the only reason we do it is for ourselves—so we can not only hang out together, but also create sad pop songs together”, Lyricist and guitarist, Paul Voge said.
In a world where attention spans are dwindling and albums in the mainstream have seemingly given way to a never ending run of singles and mixtapes, is there still a place for an album that asks you to slow down for 60 minutes and partake in an emotional journey?
Ritual and Ceremony, asks you to get on-board for a story that goes deep down the rabbit-hole of death, strained relationships and being a band that isn’t too concerned with keeping up with everyone else.
Ritual and Ceremony is available for pre-order from the WE SET SAIL and False Peak Records pages now, with an official release date in February 2021
