dänmark

If there ever was an iteration of an underground Brisbane band to rival Seattle’s Temple of the Dog, Dänmark would be a strong contender. The quintet is a culmination of members from multiple musical projects spanning the last two decades. Originating from the lauded post-rock act “The Paper and The Plane (TPATP)” from the late 00’s, guitarist Paul Voge went on to form punk rock act “We Set Sail (WSS)”, where he met guitarist Andy Martin, whose writing style and musical taste aligned with the love and energy of late 90’s punk rock. TPATP bassist Remy Boccalatte later joined WSS, bringing vocal harmony and rounding out a solid rock writing trio, but not before spending time on guitar with indie pop group “The Hungry Kids of Hungary (HKOH)”. After the loss of a friend in 2018, the desire to explore more dynamic and melodic song writing and vocal interplay led to the creation of ideas outside of the scope of WSS, so to complete the rhythm section, TPATP drummer Keith Stephens was recruited, tapping into nostalgic comfort of musicianship. Finishing off the core quintet was the introduction of keys by Kane Mazlin, a founder member of HKOH and the other half of the post-folk duo “Spring Skier” with Remy Boccalatte.

What started as a cathartic exercise to deal with loss, Dänmark has established itself as a truly collaborative experience, creating music rooted in midwestern emo like early Jimmy Eat World, Gloria Record and Appleseed Cast, and exploring a wider range of sonic elements to create a full dynamic sound, incorporating featured instruments such as trumpets and strings.

The Brisbane quintet return with the latest single. It evokes a sense of a broken spirit, reflecting on a friend's passing, and while willing to start again, recollecting how easy the interactions were.

Lyrics

Black marks on white bits of paper
My mind's far from home
But you went away
It rained for ten whole days from my face
Just in case

In case you were wondering
What’s left behind
The whole world’s exploding
It’s a hell of a time

Wasting time was never so easy
But you went away
Don’t make it stop, don’t make it stop, don’t make it stop
But you went away

This was the day
That all of our hearts broke at once
And then fuck this place
This last week just felt like a month

Wasting time was never so easy
But you went away
Don’t make it stop, don’t make it stop, don’t make it stop
But you went away

I feel like I’m deathless
And I just can’t stay
‘Cause broken things
Break every day

I know it takes strength to believe me
(‘cause you went away)
Especially when we’re apart
Convince yourself that music is healing
(‘cause you went away)
Of the life parts that are marred
(I feel like I’m deathless)
Wasting time was never so easy
(And I just can’t say)
But making time was never so hard
(‘Cause broken things)
Wasting time was never so easy
(Break every day)
